Violin Partita No. 3 in E major, BWV 1006

Violin Partita No. 3 in E major includes six ditties. First is Prelude, which means introduction. In 15th and 16th centuries, the prelude was often a ditty with impromptu character. After that it is put to suite, prelude, fugue and other genres, still carrying function of introduction and variable in content and form. The music in prelude is distinct in theme and fast in speed. Second is Loure, which means “bagpipes” in French. It is a kind of folk dance music in France accompanied with bagpipes, where the name of “Loure” is attained. In sharp contrast with the previous prelude, it shows slow and calm dance steps in 6/4 meter. Third is Gavotte en Rondeau, which is a fast French dance music in quadruple time with single rhythmic pattern. “en Rondeau” is closely related to the popular French poem, such as “Rondel” or “Rondeau”. Therefore, “Gavotte en Rondeau” is written in the form of “Gavotte” and “Rondeau”, where the thematic tone appears recurrently. Fourth are Menuett I & Menuett II, which come from the dance music in triple time of France. Since Baroque Period, many works are written in the form of minuett; due to its elegant and humorous character, it is preferred by many composers. Fifth is Bourree, a type of brisk French dancing music in duple time similar to Gavotte, only faster in speed. Sixth is Gigue, which is delightful, pure and full of youthfulness.

Violin Sonata No. 1 in G minor, BWV 1001

Violin Sonata No. 1 in G minor includes four movements. First is Adagio in the style of impromptu prelude with balanced structure. Second is Fuga (or Allegro), which means running and fast movement. This is a type of polyphonic counterpoint genre in its highest form, which includes imitative, expository and featured theme as well as steady procession in tonality based on all parts and counterpoints. Fuga is the product of polyphonic music in its maturity, which contains enormous polyphonic methods. Third is Siciliano, which comes originated from the ancient dance music in 6/8 or 12/8 meter in Sicily of Italy. It is slow in speed and starts with downbeat, frequently used in minor works and similar to pastoral in style. Fourth is Presto with variable and enormous leitmotif.

Violin Partita No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004

Partita No.2 in D minor includes five ditties, which are: Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gigue and Chaconne, or “Chacona” in Spanish, is the famous and ancient folk dance music in late 16th century. It is in 3/4 or 3/2 meter, dynamic in speed, accompanied by songs or castanets, and is in the musical texture of homophony. The great Hungarian violinist Carl Flesch says in The Art of Violin Playing that “Chaconne itself is a universe, so it’s unwise to attempt its entire look through prism. The image of Chaconne relies on different personalities and only in this way will Chaconne eng
